Paint the Gardens

Plein Air Oil Painting Experience in the beautiful Legacy Gardens on the campus of the Legacy of the Lakes Museum.

This is your chance to try your hand at painting en plein air!

Did you know painting en plein air translates from the French as (in the) open air, and is particularly associated with 19th century schools of art known for painting outdoors, including the Impressionists. Local Artist Leanne Larson will give relaxed step by step instructions as we paint the setting we see with our own eyes! This class is offered for anyone who simply wants to get outdoors and experience Plein Air Painting! All painting supplies are provided including use of a standing retractable easel that can be lowered for sitting. This is a 2-3 hour session so you can choose to sit, stand or both. Stools/chairs will also be provided. We will take breaks and have discussion times. No painting experience required! Please bring your own beverages & snacks.

Showing Motion in Digital Photography

Motion Sculpture

Capturing motion in photography can be tricky. Join Van Gooch and Claudine Grove from the Evansville Photo Club for an experimental class utilizing kinetic sculptures by John Buck on display at the museum for the summer. Participants should bring their own cameras.

“Light Up the States” Book Reading

Join local author Debbie Hoven for a fun book reading of her new children’s book that takes the holiday lights on a trip around the USA. Visit the “cowboy states”, the “lobster states”, and the “dairy states”. See how the lights add color to the Las Vegas strip, the Statue of Liberty, and so much more! Community Read: Tea Party and Garden Tour

Tea Party

Find your pretty hats and join fellow Community Read participants for a lovely tea party!  Enjoy the beauty of the Legacy Gardens, proper and dainty dishes, and have some fun with the traditional Victorian meaning of flowers. You will be introduced to the garden tour of flowers and information about the language of some of the varieties.  The self guided tour with garden guide will remain open the rest of the summer.

Join the Douglas County Library, Friends of the Library, Alexandria Community Education, and the Legacy of the Lakes Museum for a summer of fun activities celebrating our community-wide reading of “The Language of Flowers.” The themes in the book that we will explore through a wide variety of enrichment events include the traditional Victorian meaning of flowers, foster care, and the beauty of gardens.
