Youth

Curator for the Day
June 4 | Grades 3-6 | $7

Kids will learn about museum curation and what it takes to put together a museum exhibit. They’ll take what they have learned and create a museum display that will be exhibited at the museum all season long!

Planting Class
June 18 | Grades 1-6 | $7
Register here
Kids will earn their green thumbs in this class, starting off with learning the basics of planting and taking care of plants. They will help create a special “Children’s Garden” within the Legacy Gardens and can return all summer long to see how it grows! Children will be working with soil and may get dirty. Please dress appropriately.

Recycled Boat Building
July 2 | Grades 2-5 | $7

Get your creative juices flowing! Participants will build a boat out of common household supplies and recycled materials. Then they can test their designs on the water to see if it floats.

Painting in the Gardens
July 16 | Grades 1-6 | $7

Kids can let their creativity come to life in the beautiful Legacy Gardens at the Legacy of the Lakes Museum. They can take inspiration from the beautiful plantings, trees, and water and create their very own masterpiece.

Sailor School
August 6 | Grades 3-6 | $19

Sailor School is a 3-hour camp that will teach students the skills an experienced sailor needs aboard a ship, from knots to navigation and more in between. A mid-morning snack will be provided.

Shipwreck Detectives
August 20 | Grades 2-6 | $7

Join the Legacy of the Lakes Museum as we investigate Great Lakes shipwrecks. Be prepared to unlock mysteries during a fun morning of detective work through hands-on exploration and games.

Adult

Paddle Making Class
August 8-10 | $75/paddle

Join us at the museum for a 3-day workshop making your own wooden paddle, facilitated by Urban Boat Builders! No previous woodworking skills required and all tools and equipment will be provided.

Space is limited, so register early! Make a paddle solo or bring along a child/grandchild to make a special memory.

School Tours

Education tours are available opening day (mid-May) through October 31st and are open to schools (elementary through high school), homeschool groups, scouting organizations, and other education groups. Cost is $3/student and teachers, chaperones, and bus drivers are free. There are two options available for tours: Self-Guided and Semi-Guided.

Self-Guided

Self-Guided tours are without docents. You’ll be able to move through the museum at your own pace. Gallery information and scavenger hunt worksheets (geared toward elementary or middle/high school) to help guide you through can be sent to you ahead of time upon request.

Semi-Guided

Semi-Guided tours include a 20-minute lesson with a docent and the rest of your visit will be self-guided. Gallery information and scavenger hunt worksheets (geared toward elementary or middle/high school) to help guide you through can be sent to you ahead of time upon request. Lesson options include:

  • Navigation-Explores the different ways people have navigated through the centuries and includes a mini-scavenger hunt using compasses
  • Lake Industry-How Minnesota’s lakes inspired the resort and boat building industries through the lens of Alexandria Boat Works
  • Signal Flags-A fun workshop on the language of International Signal Flags
  • Water Quality-Students will learn how they impact water and what they can do to be stewards of water health
  • Flotation Science-How does a boat float? Lesson includes an experiment on buoyancy (4th grade and up)
  • Birch Bark and Dugout Canoes-Students will learn how did the first Minnesotans travel around the state and how they built their canoes
