Lake Places

Lake Places is a new, community-driven exhibit from the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Douglas County Historical Society opening at the Legacy of the Lakes Museum in Spring 2023.

Photos, interviews, and stories are how we ensure the history and memory of everyday people is preserved. Photos and stories are what connect people to the past. For this exhibit, we are looking for input from the community. Has your family been coming to the lake for generations? Check out below for how you can become involved!

Photos

Do you have photos of the old family cabin? Photos of your family enjoying the lake? Or any photos that exemplify that Minnesota tradition of “going to the lake?” We want to feature them in the exhibit!

Photos should be from pre-1980. You can submit your photo by emailing lakeplaces.exhibit@gmail.com or by filling out our online form by clicking here.

Original photos will be scanned by the historical society and returned to you. By submitting the photo, you will be agreeing that the photo may be used by the Legacy of the Lakes Museum and Douglas County Historical Society in the exhibit and in promotional materials. Any photos not used in the physical exhibit will be used in an online gallery exhibit on our website.

Interviews

We will be conducting oral interviews of people describing their lake places and family histories. Have a great story about the time Uncle Gary accidentally sank the boat? Or how your family first came to the lakes area? We’d love to sit down and chat! Email lakeplaces.exhibit@gmail.com to find an interview time that works for you or fill out this online form.

As with the photos, any interviews not used in the physical exhibit will be available in an online gallery.

Stories

Have stories but aren’t too keen on being interviewed? We are also accepting written story submissions. Email lakeplaces.exhibit@gmail.com with your story and we’ll feature it in the exhibit or online gallery. You can also mail your story to Legacy of the Lakes Museum, PO Box 1216, Alexandria, MN 56308.
